Thousands of Afghans were evacuated by US forces so far from Kabul, but most of them have been sheltering in tents at US military bases or other temporary residences around the world. They are waiting out COVID quarantine measures or transfers to their final destinations. On 29 December, the first group of Afghan refugees arrived in Kosovo, which has agreed to temporarily shelter them until they can be permanently relocated to the US. The Afghan refugees include many who helped US forces during their 20-year involvement in the country's war. According to US President Joe Biden, the US aimed to evacuate 50,000 to 65,000 Afghan allies. There are many Afghans, who have applied for humanitarian visas known as a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), and their family members. However, the US government has declined to reveal how many Afghans have arrived in the United States since the evacuation process from Kabul began.
